2027 Yarn Bomb Project

History of the Project

Kal, the knitting squirrel

For years, our customers have been greeted by incredible yarn bomb designs by Dawn of Dawn Kathryn Studios. We’re excited to continue the tradition with something new in 2027!

Before the beautiful California poppies brightened up our shop, we had Kal, busily working on his scarf. Kal retired in 2024, and our community came together to install the poppies. All flowers have their seasons, and our poppies are starting to fade. So now it's time for something new!

Call for Submissions

This time, we’re excited to bring more of our amazing community into the project, and hear about your ideas. What do YOU envision for the space? What do YOU want to see when you walk into the shop?

Through Friday, October 30th, 2026, we are asking our customers and community to submit their designs and ideas. Please email your design ideas to michelle@blacksquirrelberkeley.com including a description of the design, a small sketch or mockup of the idea, and any other relevant details.

We know this is a big undertaking, and we will be providing all materials for the project and compensation based on the final design and timeline. Compensation will be negotiated with the designer chosen, and include the time and work needed to manage the project through installation in March 2027.

Please keep in mind the following when submitting your design proposal:

  • The final design should fit the space measuring: 12ft (width) x 6ft (height)
  • The final design should be suitable for acrylic-based yarn for durability.
  • The final design should be installed no later than March 8th, 2027, in time for the Bay Area Yarn Crawl.

We value our diverse community, and always strive to create a safe space for, and uplift BIPoC and LGBTQIA voices. We would love to see this reflected in our new yarn bomb.
